Physiatry jobs are always in great demand and can have you working in a variety of locations across the U.S. and abroad. A physiatrist is a person who specializes in physical medicine and rehab. The world of physiatry combines pain management with non-surgical orthopedics and physical therapy. The most usual reasons for seeing a physiatrist is after recovering from surgery or due to an injury. Many athletes regularly see a physiatrist. This sports medicine field is probably the most well known field of physiatry.

The training to become a physiatrist is long and can be very demanding. Unfortunately it is also expensive. Students must first obtain a Bachelor of Science degree from an undergraduate course.  This Science program consists of learning biology, anatomy, math, chemistry and psychology.  To be accepted into medical school the student must pass the MCAT test.

The next step in the training process is to complete another four years of study at an accepted medical school. After successful graduation another four years of residency is required. During this residency time the physiatrist will apply all the practical skills that they have learned.

It does take a considerable time to become qualified but currently salaries are ranging above the $200,000 mark. In time with more experience this figure can increase.

To practice physiatry you must become certified and licensed. This is done by getting certified from the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. To receive the certificate you must pass written and oral exams which the board offers.  At various times throughout your career you will need to retake this exam to ensure your skills are up to date.

The future for physiatry jobs is looking excellent. Today more people are trying to avoid surgery and are seeking other options for pain management. The physiatrist is the key person to help them achieve a positive outlook and hopefully remedy for their situation.

Many physiatrists can find job opportunities in hospitals, private practices and independent rehabilitation clinics.  Others choose to set up their own private practice. In this case many are opening sports medicine clinics. With some physiatrists being solely employed by their local University or Athletic Association.  In this regard the physiatrist would be working on a consultant’s basis.

Being licensed and certified with The American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation can be a huge benefit. They will have great connections and strong leads for physiatry jobs across the country. Many times the medical schools you attended can also help with finding physiatry jobs.
